With frontman Thom York creating a new band (Atoms For Peace) earlier this year and Johnny Greenwood creating compositions for BBC, it’s only natural that drummer Philip Selway begins his own solo career.

Selway’s first solo album, Familial, is scheduled to debut in the U.S. on Aug. 31. The album features collaborations with Soul Coughing’s Sebastian Steinberg, Lisa Germano, Patrick Sansone, and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche.

He doesn’t just excel behind a drum set; Selway has also been providing lead and backing vocals, and occasional guitar, for a New Zealand band called 7 Worlds Collide.

He reveals, ” We’re in the heart of the record… I’m really excited, I feel like this is the best record we ever made.  It really is genuinely exciting.  It’s very different from what we did last time.”

Work on the new record began back in May of 2009.  This past August the boys released “Harry Patch (In Memory Of),” a tribute to the last surviving WWI British soldier.

There has been no word of an official release date yet.  Thom Yorke has also sporadically been performing solo, appearing next at the Big Chill Festival on Aug 6th.  Drummer Phil Selway is making his solo debut, “Familial” on August 3oth.

In addition to raising money for Haitian earthquake relief, Yorke and company raised fans’ hopes that a new release could soon be on the horizon. Hopes for Radiohead tickets would quickly follow.

Yorke also contributed to a new album called “Sisterworld” by Liars.

“These Are My Twisted Words” was posted on the message board of At Ease, a fan site. The source file includes “Wall of Ice,” which is assumed to be the name of the new EP.

The band has said in the past that they traditionally like to put 10 or 11 songs together, but it doesn’t feel as natural as it used to, so they might do smaller EPs with four or five songs.

They are no strangers to innovative music release methods – in 2007, they released “In Rainbows” digitally on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Ideas are brewing and instruments are bubbling as the band decides what’s to come next creatively and otherwise after their last pioneering efforts on In Rainbows. What will remain the same, however, is their choice to continuing working with producer Nigel Godrich, who’s been with the band since 1997’s OK Computer.

Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood told BBC News in a recent interview, “We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re looking at all the bits and thinking, what next?”

The band is given props for bucking the music industry system by continuing to do their own thing and making their own rules as they go. Most notably and recently, they let fans name their own price for downloads of their 2007 release, In Rainbows.

Radiohead may not be the most profitable band around, but they are one of the most influential, known to every college kid coast-to-coast. Not many bands can say that.

The VHS video remix, which is signed by all five Radiohead members, is the only copy in existence and was created by NME Future 50 star James Rutledge. Rutledge says that Radiohead has given him their full support in allowing it to be sold on eBay to profit the charity.

Bidding is set to end at 10pm on Sunday, December 21.

“In Rainbows” received some of the best reviews of their illustrious career. Thom Yorke, the bands lead singer, described “In Rainbows” as their attempt to “describe…as coherently and conclusively as possible, what moves us.”

Since the conclusion of their latest tour, Radiohead has plans to record new songs.

Considered by many to be the most influential band in the world, Radiohead, along with front man Thom Yorke, will continue to wow audiences across North America throughout August before embarking on a trip to Japan in October to close out the tour.
